38. QueerFilmFestival Esslingen
Based on a film series initiated and realised by "Rosa Zwiebel Esslingen", the Esslingen Queer Film Festival (formerly the Esslingen Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) was established in the late 1980s. It takes place annually at the beginning of November with a week-long programme at the Kommunales Kino Esslingen cinema, inviting audiences on an exciting journey of discovery through the world of contemporary queer cinema.
With around 15 feature films and 20 short films, the festival showcases the humorous, colourful, cheerful, musical, tragicomic, but also thoughtful, dramatic, experimental and combative sides of queer life. Since its founding, the festival, one of the oldest of its kind in Germany, has become a fixture in the gay and lesbian festival scene and is a member of QueerScope, the independent association of German gay and lesbian festivals.
The desire to offer the audience fun and enjoyable entertainment goes hand in hand with the aim of the festival organisers (most of whom work on a voluntary basis) to provide a forum for socially engaged, thought-provoking and sophisticated film culture. The film programme is complemented by live events, discussion events, film talks, etc.
